A key aspect of what we do at Breezemount is keeping on top of the latest technology so that we always improve our systems. Recently, we installed an EVOLOOP Sensor to a barrier at a school, which improves the safety of the barrier.
So, how did we approach this?
Project Overview
The existing automatic barrier dates to 2003, installed by Breezemount and was fitted with the safety features of the time. The barrier has stood the test of time and the elements, but it was time for an upgrade.
While the barrier was perfectly functional regarding vehicles, as the existing loops were still doing their job effectively. The issue, however, was that the barrier was not safe for pedestrians.
Fortunately, we now have the technology to seamlessly install safety systems that cover both vehicles and pedestrians.
The Challenge
This was a rather straightforward task: make this older system more compliant with modern safety standards. That said, we needed to ensure that this was going to be approached carefully with the best possible result in mind.
The system had existing loops that function to detect metal, which is very effective for vehicles but completely negates pedestrians. Ideally, when implementing any system, you want it to have as little footprint and structural work as possible. This meant that our team sought out solutions to keep the existing barrier system intact as much as possible, while installing an upgraded safety system.
The Solution
Fortunately, there was a new product available to approach this problem: the EVOLOOP from BEA Sensors.
Unlike photocells, which operates via point-to-point beams, the EVOLOOP uses a detection field to identify any obstructions, ensuring the barrier will not drop on whatever had triggered the area.
A bonus is the added ability to fine tune the detection zones. Therefore, we could adjust the detection zones to perfectly fit the barrier in question.
The Installation
The installation was a very simple process. Due to the “plug-and-go” nature of the new EVOLOOP, it was a simple matter of attaching the device to the base of the barrier.
One of the costliest aspects of system installation is roadworks. It’s time consuming, disrupts the flow of traffic, and requires a lot of manual labour. Fortunately, this was no longer an issue as the EVOLOOP is designed to be installed without any need for digging up the road.
Our engineer on site quickly and cleanly installed the EVOLOOP without issue. Once properly calibrated to fit with the requirements of the environment, the safety upgrade was complete, and the school was able to operate the barrier once again.
Retrospective
This project shows that using the best equipment can lead to longevity, as this barrier has been in operation for 23 years. Still, we are aware of the importance of improving systems as developments in the industries are made. Improving our work is something we pride on, and we look forward to the next safety breakthrough for our next visit.
