The first project we’re looking at as part of Breezemount’s 50-year anniversary is the impressive new Belfast Transport Hub, the new cornerstone of the city and the country’s transport network. Breezemount enhanced the perimeter security of this site by installing robust telescopic bollards
Project Overview
The transport infrastructure of the city needed re-evaluating and evolving. The method chosen by the government was an all-new transport hub located on the Grosvenor Road area in Belfast. The new Grand Central Station was to replace the busy Great Victoria Street Railway station and the Europa Buscentre. These sites were critical in transporting the public through all Northern Ireland’s railway tracks, the airports, and connections straight to Dublin. This highlights the importance of the new Belfast Transport Hub, which needed to be safe, efficient and maximise user-experience.
To ensure the perimeter security requirements would be achieved effectively, Breezemount paired with principal contractor Farrans and security manufacturer ATG Access. Through this collaboration, the Hub is now running smoothly and safely.
The Challenge
One of the key issues of projects like this is understanding the flow of vehicles and pedestrians. These sites are always open and always being used, so keeping them safe is a challenge. To approach this, Breezemount worked closely with Farrans to assess the demands of the site.
Many considerations were taken. It was important to consider the security requirement of the site, though it needed to be integrated with the flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Industry standards of safety and regulations also must be upheld. It was vitally important to address all these concerns without compromising the aesthetic design of the Hub as well.
Designs of the site were reviewed by Breezemount in order to identify the locations that required a safety solution.
The Solution
After careful consideration, Breezemount highlighted the areas that required Heavy Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) Telescopic Bollards. ATG Access, a leading expert in bollards, designed a bollard system in conjunction with Breezemount to ensure the plan was both technically sound and visually appealing.
It was imperative that these bollards would be reliable and durable on a long-term basis. Extensive care was taken to ensure the telescopic bollards would be spaced strategically, within the design of the station itself and minimising impact on visitors and vehicles.
Together, Breezemount and ATG Access delivered an effective perimeter security solution for each bollard that will stand the test of time and protect both the station and the public should an incident occur.
The Installation
Breezemount’s expert engineers spearheaded the installation, working closely with Farrans to ensure everything was coordinated effectively. Precision and attention to detail were paramount to the success of the installation. Each telescopic bollard needed to be positioned with accuracy, installed correctly, seamlessly integrated, and compliant.
The time sensitive nature of the project meant our team needed to work quickly and within the scope of Farrans greater works at the Hub. As an important part of modern Belfast, no delays could be spared.
Fortunately, the installation was a huge success and now serve an essential role at the largest transport hub on the whole island.
Retrospective
It’s a privilege to work on such a high profile and historic perimeter security project which benefits not only Belfast but Ireland. We’re proud of our work on the Belfast Transport Hub, but we’re never just content with our work. As with any project, we learned a lot during this installation. We have since reviewed our performance on this task and identified some areas for improvement moving forward.
As the project wrapped up last year, it’s fitting for this impressive project to be one of the first we look at for our company’s 50 year celebration. Not many projects are of this scale, and we pride ourselves on taking on a large variety of tasks with various types of solutions.
