The Dundonald International Ice Bowl naturally has a high level of vehicle traffic in their premises. In order to maintain and control the traffic flow and to deter vehicles entering the overflow parking area when it was closed, further solutions were required.
Project Overview
The Ice Bowl is a very popular site in Dundonald. Visitors can go bowling, roam in the play areas, and skate around their famous rink. The Ice Bowl is also in the midst of redevelopments, improving and enhancing their amenities, such as an Olympic-sized rink and an extended bowling area.
Part of this redevelopment looked towards addressing issues with their parking areas as well. This was something Breezemount could facilitate.
The Challenge
The site utilises overflow car parking for when the building gets particularly busy, such as when they hold events or there are large parties. With the redevelopment, it is expected that this parking space will be used more regularly.
Two existing barriers were used to keep the overflow car park secure when it wasn’t required, but issues arose when some individuals would still attempt to park there when it was closed off.
It was evident that more security would be required.
The Solution
It was evident to Breezemount that the entrance and exit barriers did not suffice on their own. After reviewing the site, it seemed the best solutions would be telescopic bollards.
Working with supplier ATG Access, we determined that 90×90 bollards with lift assist was the best way forward, as the bollards would be put up easily when they were needed, and would be effective in preventing vehicles entering the car park.
Six bollards would be required, three for each entrance.
The Installation
Great care was taken when installing the bollards. The ground had been surveyed through a Cable Avoidance Tool to ensure no underground services would be affected during the excavation stage.
Work began by the car park entrance barrier. We worked efficiently and effectively to get the installation finished to prevent further disruption to the site. The exit followed not long after and the job was completed swiftly though within proper procedure.
Retrospective
It’s important not to underestimate the effectiveness of bollards. They are a great way to keep a site secure and prevent unauthorised access from vehicles. They have a great utility and can greatly enhance the security of a site despite little footprint.
The Dundonald International Ice Bowl is a great site to work on as it has a special place in the hearts of many children in the area and beyond.
We look forward to our next project!
